Recent studies have shown that the functioning of the gut-brain axis depends on the gut microbiota

The term gut–microbiota–brain axis is currently used to describe the complex bidirectional communication network between the gastrointestinal tract, the gut microbiota, and the central nervous system. This axis operates in both directions: psychological stress may adversely affect the composition and function of the gut microbiota, while dysbiosis may influence brain function and behavior.

Communication within the gut–microbiota–brain axis is mediated through multiple pathways, including neurotransmitters, the autonomic nervous system, the vagus nerve, cytokines produced by immune effector cells stimulated by the microbiota, and various metabolites generated by gut microorganisms.

Probiotics may exert beneficial effects on physiological functions related to the central nervous system. Probiotic strains that influence central nervous system function through modulation of the gut–brain axis are commonly referred to as psychobiotics.
